Winter Bedding Guide: How to Layer Cotton Bedsheets and Dohars
Share
The short answer: keep sleeping on a pure cotton bedsheet all winter, and change the layers on top as the weather turns. In the early and late weeks of winter, a cotton dohar on its own is often enough. In the coldest weeks, add your razai or quilt on top, and keep the dohar between you and the heavy layer. Cotton breathes, so you stay warm without waking up clammy. The dohar is also much easier to wash than a razai.
Why pure cotton still makes sense in winter
Many people switch to synthetic "winter" bedsheets when the weather cools. But warmth in bed comes mainly from the layers on top of you, not the sheet underneath. A pure cotton bedsheet does the job a sheet should do in every season:
- It breathes. Under a heavy razai, you can still overheat at night. Cotton lets heat and moisture escape, so you're less likely to wake up sweaty under the covers.
- It's gentle on skin. Winter air is dry. A soft, natural fibre against your skin is more comfortable than a slippery synthetic finish.
- It's easy to wash. You can wash a cotton bedsheet as often as you like, even when your heavier bedding can't be washed often.
How to layer your bed through the winter
| Weather | Typically | What to use |
|---|---|---|
| Change of season | Cool nights, warm days; fan off, AC off | Cotton bedsheet + a reversible mulmul dohar |
| Mild winter nights | Chilly evenings, cold early mornings | Cotton bedsheet + a dohar, with a second dohar or a light blanket nearby |
| Peak winter | Cold nights and foggy mornings, as in North India in December and January | Cotton bedsheet + dohar + your razai or quilt on top |
| Heater on | A warm, dry room | Cotton bedsheet + dohar; the razai may be too much |
Exact timing depends on where you live. A Delhi winter needs more than a Bengaluru winter. Go by how your room feels at night.
The dohar trick: keep it between you and the razai
In peak winter, put the dohar under your razai rather than packing it away. It's a soft cotton layer against your skin, it adds a little extra warmth, and it protects the razai. Then you wash the dohar regularly and the heavy razai far less often. When the weather warms, the razai comes off and the dohar is already on the bed.
Which dohar for winter?
Both our dohars are 100% pure cotton, and both are light layers rather than winter quilts.
- Reversible mulmul dohars (from ₹3,399) have two outer layers of mulmul with a cotton filling in between, and a different print on each side.
- Premium muslin dohars (from ₹4,499) are made from three layers of muslin cotton.
How warm a dohar feels depends on its layers, its weight and your room, so choose the one you like the feel and look of. Our mulmul vs muslin dohar guide compares them in detail.
Sharing a bed? A Pair of Single dohars (two of 60 × 90 inches) lets each person adjust their own layer, which helps when one of you feels the cold more. A Double dohar (90 × 108 inches) is one shared cover.
Which bedsheet feels best in winter?
Every cotton weave works year-round. How it feels is a matter of preference:
- Everyday Cotton (20s yarn) has a slightly thicker, more substantial hand that many people find cosy in cooler months.
- Sateen Cotton is smooth with a soft sheen, which feels less crisp and cool to the touch than percale.
- Percale Cotton is crisp and matte. It's loved in summer, but some people prefer something softer in winter.
Warm colours help a winter bedroom feel cosy too: deep reds, mustards, rust and indigo.

Winter care tips
- Plan washing around the weather. Cotton takes longer to dry on foggy, humid days. Wash in the morning and dry in a well-ventilated spot.
- Avoid hot water, even in winter. Cold or lukewarm water up to 30°C protects colour and size.
- Make sure everything is fully dry before it goes back on the bed or into storage, or it can smell musty.
- Air your summer bedding before storing it. Fold it and keep it in its cotton bag until spring.

Frequently asked questions
Can I use cotton bedsheets in winter?
Yes. A pure cotton bedsheet is comfortable all year. In winter, add warmth with layers on top, such as a dohar and a razai, rather than switching to a synthetic sheet.
Is a dohar enough for winter?
A dohar is a light layer. It's often enough at the start and end of winter, in mild climates, or in a heated room. In peak winter in colder regions, use it under a heavier razai or quilt.
Should the dohar go over or under the razai?
Under works best for most people. The dohar sits against you as a soft, washable layer and keeps the razai clean.
Which is warmer, a mulmul or a muslin dohar?
It depends on the layers, weight and your room. Our mulmul dohars have two mulmul layers with a cotton filling; our premium muslin dohars have three layers of muslin. Choose by the feel and look you prefer.
Which dohar size is best for a couple in winter?
A Pair of Single dohars (two of 60 × 90 inches) lets each person use their own layer. A Double dohar (90 × 108 inches) is one shared cover.
Do you sell razais or quilts?
No. We make pure cotton bedsheets, dohars, bedding sets and cushion covers, which work beautifully with the razai or quilt you already own.
