How to Choose a Pure Cotton Bedsheet: The Complete Guide for Indian Homes
Share
The short answer: a good pure cotton bedsheet is 100% cotton with no polyester, glace or microfibre blended in. Beyond that, the right choice depends on the weave and yarn (which decide how it feels), the size (which decides how it fits), and the print and craft (which decide how it looks). This guide explains each in plain language, so you can choose with confidence for an Indian home and climate.
What does "pure cotton" actually mean?
A pure cotton bedsheet is woven only from cotton fibre. Many bedsheets sold as "cotton" are actually blends: cotton mixed with polyester, or "glace cotton", which is usually a polyester-cotton blend with a shiny finish. Blends can feel smooth at first, but they trap heat and are less breathable than pure cotton, which matters in India's warm months.
At The Bed Edit our line is simple: pure cotton, nothing else. No blends, no microfibre.
How can I check if a bedsheet is pure cotton at home?
- Read the label carefully. Look for "100% cotton". Words like "cotton feel", "cotton rich", "poly-cotton" or "glace cotton" usually mean a blend.
- Feel and breathability. Pure cotton feels soft and matte and absorbs moisture. Blends often feel slippery or slightly plasticky and can feel warm to sleep on.
- The burn test (on a loose thread only). Cotton burns like paper, smells like burning paper and leaves a soft grey ash. Polyester melts, shrinks away from the flame and leaves a hard bead. Only try this on a stray thread, safely, away from anything flammable.
Weave and yarn: what decides how a bedsheet feels
Two pure cotton bedsheets can feel very different. The difference comes from the yarn (how fine the cotton thread is) and the weave (how the threads are interlaced).
20s vs 30s cotton yarn
Yarn "count" describes how fine the thread is: the higher the number, the finer the yarn. A 30s yarn is finer than a 20s yarn.
- 20s yarn gives a sturdier, slightly heavier sheet that holds up well to frequent washing. Our Everyday Cotton range uses 20s cotton yarn.
- 30s yarn gives a lighter, softer sheet with a finer hand-feel. Our Soft Fine Cotton range uses finer 30s cotton yarn.
Percale vs sateen
- Percale is a simple one-over-one-under weave. It feels crisp, cool and matte, a lot like a well-pressed cotton shirt, which makes it a favourite for hot weather. Explore our Percale Cotton range.
- Sateen floats more threads on the surface, giving a smooth feel and a soft sheen. Our Kora range is a solid, unprinted sateen cotton.
Is a higher thread count always better?
No. Thread count is the number of threads woven into one square inch of fabric. It is often used as a marketing number, and a very high figure can be reached by using thin, multi-ply threads that don't make the sheet feel better. Fibre quality, yarn and weave usually matter more to how a bedsheet feels and lasts. That's why we describe our bedsheets by yarn and weave rather than quoting a thread count.
Bedsheet sizes in India: which one do I need?
Bed sizes in India aren't fully standardised, so it helps to measure your mattress (length, width and thickness) before you buy. Our bedsheet sizes are:
- Single: 60 × 90 inches, with 1 pillow cover. For single beds and kids' rooms. Shop Single
- King: 95 × 108 inches, with 2 pillow covers. Fits most double beds. Shop King
- Super King: 108 × 108 inches, with 2 pillow covers. For larger beds and a generous drape. Shop Super King
- Jumbo King: 120 × 120 inches, on selected designs. For very large beds. Shop Jumbo King
A simple rule: a flat bedsheet should be at least your mattress size plus twice the mattress thickness on each side, plus a few inches to tuck in. If you are between two sizes, go bigger. Still unsure? Share your mattress measurements with us and we'll help.
Prints and crafts: hand block, Bagru, screen print and more
- Hand block printing: artisans press carved wooden blocks onto the fabric by hand. Small variations in alignment and colour are part of the charm. See the Hand Block Edit.
- Indigo Bagru: a traditional Rajasthani block printing craft known for its deep indigo tones. See The Indigo Edit.
- Screen printing: gives crisp, even, consistent repeats across the whole sheet, and makes printed cotton more accessible.
- Kashida hand embroidery: designs embroidered by hand onto the bedsheet. See the Kashida Edit.
Mulmul dohar vs muslin dohar
A dohar is a light layered cotton cover, lighter than a quilt and ideal for AC rooms and mild weather.
- Our reversible mulmul dohars have two layers of soft mulmul cotton with a cotton filling in between, with a different pattern on each side. Shop mulmul dohars
- Our premium muslin dohars are made from three layers of muslin cotton. Shop muslin dohars
Dohars come as a Pair of Single (two 60 × 90 inch dohars) or one Double (90 × 108 inches).
How to care for pure cotton bedsheets
- Wash separately for the first few washes, as with any printed cotton.
- Use cold or lukewarm water (up to 30°C) and a mild or liquid detergent.
- Avoid bleach, harsh chemicals, fabric softeners, soaking and hard scrubbing.
- Dry in shade rather than direct sunlight to protect the colours.
- Iron on low if needed, and store folded in a cotton bag.
A practical five-point bedsheet buying checklist
- Fibre: Confirm that the product specifies 100% cotton rather than a cotton-feel blend.
- Fabric: Compare Everyday, Soft Fine, Percale and Luxe Cotton by documented feel, construction and care—not thread count alone.
- Fit: Measure your mattress length, width and depth. The Bed Edit standard flat sheets are Single 60 × 90 inches, King 95 × 108 inches, Super King 108 × 108 inches and Jumbo King 120 × 120 inches; verify the selected product and size at checkout.
- Printing: Distinguish a print technique (hand block, screen or discharge) from the cotton fibre and weave.
- Care and value: Check washing instructions, pieces included, current inventory and the relevant return policy.
Quick answer: Start with 100% cotton composition and the correct dimensions, then choose the feel and design you prefer. A higher thread-count claim alone is not proof of better quality.
What we can verify before recommending a bedsheet
At The Bed Edit, our product listings identify the cotton fabric category, available dimensions and the items included. These are practical checks you can make against the exact variant at checkout. A photograph cannot independently prove fibre composition, and neither softness nor durability can be certified by thread count alone. If independent fibre-composition proof is important to your purchase, request relevant supplier or laboratory documentation for that specific fabric.
Fabric, weave, yarn and craft are different choices

Frequently asked questions
What is the best fabric for bedsheets in Indian summers?
Pure cotton, because it is breathable and absorbs moisture. A crisp percale weave or a lighter, finer cotton feels especially cool in hot weather.
What is the difference between glace cotton and pure cotton?
Glace cotton is usually a polyester-cotton blend with a shiny finish. Pure cotton is 100% cotton fibre, which is more breathable.
Is 20s or 30s cotton better?
Neither is simply better. 20s yarn makes a sturdier everyday sheet; 30s yarn makes a lighter, softer sheet. Choose by the feel you prefer.
Does thread count matter?
Less than it's often made out to. Fibre quality, yarn and weave usually matter more than a high thread count number.
What size bedsheet do I need for a double bed in India?
King (95 × 108 inches) fits most double beds. For larger beds or a deeper drape, choose Super King (108 × 108 inches).
Are hand block printed bedsheets uneven?
Slight variations are natural in hand block printing, because each block is placed by hand. They are a mark of the craft, not a defect.
Are The Bed Edit bedsheets pure cotton?
Yes. All our bedsheets are 100% pure cotton, with no blends and no microfibre.
Pure cotton verification checklist: what can you actually trust?
To assess a bedsheet, start with the stated fibre composition, not a single home experiment. Look for 100% cotton on the label or product specifications, check whether the seller clearly distinguishes cotton from cotton blends, and request fabric details if the composition is unclear.
Wrinkles, sheen, how fast a water drop absorbs, and how the fabric feels in your hand can vary with the weave and finishing. None is a conclusive identification test. Do not burn fabric to test it; independent fibre testing is the appropriate route when proof is essential.
Remember: a cotton sateen bedsheet may look subtly shiny and still be entirely cotton. And two 100% cotton bedsheets can feel different because of yarn, weave, finishing and construction.
For the next step, explore thread count vs yarn count, then compare cotton fabrics for Indian weather.
