Gulmohar green botanical striped pure cotton bedsheet with matching pillow covers in a plant-filled bedroom

Fitted vs Flat Bedsheet: Which One Should You Buy?

The short answer: a flat bedsheet is a plain rectangle of fabric that you tuck under the mattress. A fitted bedsheet has elasticated corners that hug the mattress, so it stays put without tucking. Flat sheets are more versatile, easier to iron and fit beds of slightly different sizes; fitted sheets are quicker to put on and stay neater on busy beds. At The Bed Edit, every bedsheet is made flat as standard, and any design, in any of its sizes, can be made fitted to order for ₹500 extra. Just WhatsApp us on +91-9211313123.

Why most Indian homes use flat bedsheets

In most Indian homes, the bedsheet is the star of the bedroom. It's often the only layer on the bed for much of the year, and people like to see the full print falling over the sides. A flat sheet does exactly that. It also forgives the fact that bed and mattress sizes in India aren't standardised: a flat King bedsheet (95 × 108 inches) sits comfortably on a range of queen-size beds, whereas a fitted sheet only fits the mattress it was made for.

Flat sheets are also simpler to live with. They fold into a neat square, iron easily and can be pulled out for a guest bed, a divan or even as a light summer cover.

When a fitted bedsheet makes more sense

  • Kids' rooms. Children jump, roll and kick. A fitted sheet stays in place, so you aren't re-tucking the bed every morning.
  • Thick mattresses and toppers. If your mattress is deep, a flat sheet can struggle to tuck far enough underneath. Fitted corners hold on better.
  • Beds that are hard to tuck. Storage beds and beds pushed against a wall are awkward to make. Fitted sheets save you lifting a heavy mattress.
  • You like a crisp, hotel-style top. A fitted sheet gives a smooth surface with no folds or overhang.
  • Busy mornings. If you change sheets often and want it done in two minutes, fitted is faster.

When a flat bedsheet is the better choice

  • You love the print. Hand block, Bagru and floral designs look their best when they fall over the sides of the bed.
  • You're gifting. A flat sheet works on almost any bed, so you don't need to know the exact mattress size. It can also be exchanged if the size isn't right.
  • You move sheets between beds. A flat Super King works on a king bed today and a larger guest bed tomorrow.
  • You iron your bedding. Flat sheets are much easier to press and fold.

How to keep a flat bedsheet tucked in all night

If you're staying with flat sheets, a good tuck makes all the difference.

  1. Get the size right. A flat sheet needs enough fabric to wrap under the mattress on every side. Our formula: bedsheet size = (bed length + 2 × mattress height + 4 in) × (bed breadth + 2 × mattress height + 4 in). If you're between sizes, go bigger. Our King vs Super King guide has a size chart for common Indian beds.
  2. Centre the sheet so the overhang is even on both sides.
  3. Tuck the head and foot first, pulling the fabric firmly under the mattress.
  4. Make a hospital corner at each corner: lift the loose side fabric up into a 45° triangle on top of the bed, tuck the hanging part under, then let the triangle drop and tuck it in.
  5. Tuck the sides last, working from the corners to the middle.

Pure cotton helps here too. It has a natural, slightly textured grip, so a well-tucked cotton sheet stays in place better than a slippery, shiny synthetic finish.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a fitted and a flat bedsheet?

A flat bedsheet is a plain rectangle that you tuck under the mattress. A fitted bedsheet has elasticated corners that grip the mattress, so it stays on without tucking.

Which is better, fitted or flat?

Neither is better for everyone. Choose fitted if you want a quick, snug bed that stays put, especially on kids' beds or thick mattresses. Choose flat if you want the print to drape over the sides, need to fit beds of different sizes, or are buying a gift.

Do The Bed Edit bedsheets come fitted?

All our bedsheets are flat as standard. Any design can be made fitted to order, in any size that design comes in, for ₹500 extra. WhatsApp us on +91-9211313123 to order.

How long does a fitted bedsheet take to arrive?

Fitted bedsheets take 2–3 days longer than our usual timeline of dispatch in 2–3 working days and delivery in 5–10 working days after dispatch.

Can I return or exchange a fitted bedsheet?

No. Fitted bedsheets are made to order, so they cannot be returned or exchanged. Flat bedsheets can be returned or exchanged within 7 days of delivery if unused, unwashed and in their original packaging.

Can I use a flat bedsheet as a top sheet?

Yes. Many people use a light cotton flat sheet as a cover in summer or between themselves and a dohar or quilt. It's easier to wash than the heavier layer.

What size fitted bedsheet should I order?

Choose the size you would normally buy for your bed. If you aren't sure, our bedsheet size calculator will suggest one.
