How to Style Your Bed: Bedsheets, Dohars and Cushion Covers That Go Together

The short answer: a well-styled bed needs just three layers: a bedsheet as the base, a dohar folded at the foot of the bed, and two to four cushion covers in front of the pillows. Let one piece carry the main print, keep the others quieter, and pull your cushion colour from a small detail in the bedsheet. The easiest shortcut is to choose pieces from the same design family. Many of our prints come as a bedsheet, a reversible dohar and a cushion cover, so they're coordinated before you start.

The three-layer formula

Layer What it does How to use it
1. Bedsheet Sets the colour and mood of the room Smooth it flat and tuck it neatly. A printed sheet becomes the hero; a solid sheet lets the dohar shine.
2. Dohar Adds depth, texture and a second colour Fold it in thirds across the foot of the bed, covering about a quarter to a third of the bed.
3. Cushion covers Finish the look and tie the colours together Stand two to four 16 × 16 inch cushions upright in front of your sleeping pillows.

That's it. You don't need a bed runner, a throw and six cushions to make a bed look finished.

Step 1: Start with the bedsheet

Decide whether your bedsheet or your dohar will be the hero, the piece with the boldest print.

  • Printed bedsheet as the hero. Choose a busy floral, jaal or hand block sheet, then keep the dohar and cushions in colours already in the print. This is the classic Indian look, and it works in almost any room.
  • Solid bedsheet as a calm base. A plain sheet, like our Kora Sateen solids, lets a printed dohar and cushions take centre stage. It's a good choice for small rooms and minimal interiors.

Smooth the sheet flat and tuck it in properly. Even the prettiest bed looks untidy if the bottom sheet is creased and sliding off. Our fitted vs flat bedsheet guide has a quick tucking method.

Step 2: Add a dohar at the foot of the bed

Fold the dohar in thirds lengthways and lay it across the foot of the bed. It adds a second colour, a softer texture and an inviting, layered look in the daytime, and it's right there when you want it at night.

  • With a reversible mulmul dohar, fold it so a little of the reverse side shows. You get two prints from one piece.
  • On a printed bedsheet, choose a dohar in a quieter colour from the same palette.
  • On a solid bedsheet, go bold with the dohar. This is where your statement print belongs.

Step 3: Finish with cushion covers

Cushions are the cheapest way to change the whole look of a bed. Our cushion covers are all 16 × 16 inches, with quilted covers at ₹349 and hand block canvas covers at ₹499.

  • How many? Two for a single bed, two to four for a King or Super King. Stand them upright in front of your pillows.
  • Which colour? Pick a colour from the smallest detail in your bedsheet print: a leaf, a border, a flower centre. It ties the bed together without looking matchy.
  • Mix textures. Pair a smooth cotton bedsheet with quilted cushion covers for softness, or with hand block canvas covers for a more handcrafted look.

Ready-made pairings from the same design family

If you'd rather not mix and match, choose pieces that share a design name. They're made to go together.

Styling tips by room

Small bedrooms

Choose a light base, such as an ivory or pastel print or a solid sheet, and keep the number of colours to two or three. Two cushions are enough. A tidy, uncluttered bed makes a small room feel bigger.

Master bedroom

This is where a statement print belongs. Go for a hand block or hand embroidered bedsheet with a quieter dohar, or a solid sheet under a bold reversible dohar. Four cushions on a King or Super King bed look generous without crowding.

Guest room

Keep it simple and welcoming: a fresh floral bedsheet, a dohar folded at the foot so guests can use it if the AC is cold, and two cushions.

Kids' room

Let them have fun with a playful kids' bedsheet. Skip lots of cushions; one or two is plenty on a bed that gets jumped on.

Common styling mistakes

  • Three busy prints at once. Pick one hero and let the rest support it.
  • Too many cushions. If you have to clear the bed every night, there are too many.
  • A dohar spread flat over the whole bed in the daytime. It hides the bedsheet. Fold it at the foot instead.
  • Ignoring the pillow covers. Your bedsheet's matching pillow covers already tie the bed together. Use them, then add cushions in front.

Frequently asked questions

How do I style a bed with a dohar?

Fold the dohar in thirds lengthways and lay it across the foot of the bed. On a printed bedsheet, pick a dohar in a quieter colour from the same palette. On a solid bedsheet, choose a bold printed dohar.

How many cushions should I put on a bed?

Two on a single bed, and two to four on a King or Super King bed, standing upright in front of the sleeping pillows.

What size are The Bed Edit cushion covers?

All our cushion covers are 16 × 16 inches. Quilted covers are ₹349 and hand block canvas covers are ₹499.

Should my bedsheet and dohar match?

They don't have to match exactly, but they should share a colour. The easiest option is to pick pieces from the same design family, or a ready-made bedding set.

Can I use a printed bedsheet with a printed dohar?

Yes, if one print is clearly bolder than the other and they share at least one colour. A large floral with a small, quieter pattern works well.

What goes with a solid bedsheet?

A solid bedsheet is the perfect base for a bold printed dohar and cushion covers in one or two of the dohar's colours.
